What Are Psychedelics Drugs
Psychedelic drugs, also known as hallucinogenic drugs, or simply hallucinogens, are a group of substances, including chemicals, such as LSD, and plants, such as peyote, that are usually used recreationally, to change and enhance sensory perceptions, thought processes, energy levels, and to facilitate spiritual experiences.
They were used in psychotherapy in the 1960s, but this was halted for mainly political reasons until quite recently, and psychological research has undergone a revival of the use of psychedelics in experimental psychological treatment.
Use of hallucinogens goes back for centuries in a variety of cultures, and some are still used in religious ceremonies. Their use peaked in the United States in the 1960s, The rave culture of the 1980s brought a new wave of ecstasy use, which continues today.
Type Of Psychedelics
There are are numerous types of psychedelics namely but here we will base on the most popular and available types namely:
N,N-Dimethyltryptamine DMT, Lysergic acid diethylamide LSD, methylenedioxy-methylamphetamine MDMA, Mescalin or Peyote, Ayahuasca, Magic Mushroom and Ketamine.
1.N,N-Dimethyltryptamine DMT:
is a hallucinogenic tryptamine drug that occurs naturally in many plants and animals. It is also referred to as the “spirit molecule” due to the intense psychedelic experience.
Although lesser known than other psychedelics such as LSD or magic mushrooms, DMT produces a brief but intense visual and auditory hallucinogenic experience.
2.Lysergic acid diethylamide LSD:
LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide), first synthesized in 1938, is an extremely potent hallucinogen. It is synthetically made from lysergic acid, which is found in ergot, a fungus that grows on rye and other grains. It is so potent its doses tend to be in the microgram (mcg) range. It’s effects, often called a “trip”, can be stimulating, pleasurable, and mind-altering or it can lead to an unpleasant, sometimes terrifying experience called a “bad trip.”
3.Methylenedioxy-Methylamphetamine MDMA:
MDMA (3,4 – methylenedioxymethamphetamine), or more commonly known as Molly or Ecstasy, is a synthetic substance first developed in 1912 as a precursor to the synthesis of hemostatic agents (not as an appetite suppressant as incorrectly reported).Due to its effects on promoting empathy and facilitating communication, the drug became popular in the early 1970s among psychiatrists for its therapeutic potential.
4.Mescalin or Peyote:
Mescaline is a psychedelic hallucinogen obtained from the small, spineless cactus Peyote (Lophophora williamsi), the San Pedro cactus, Peruvian torch cactus, and other mescaline-containing cacti. It is also found in certain members of the Fabaceae (bean family) and can be produced synthetically.
5.Ayahuasca:
You may have heard stories of people traveling to foreign destinations to experience taking Ayahuasca, a psychoactive brew.Typically, these anecdotes tend to focus on the immediate effects that take place during an Ayahuasca “trip,” some of which are enlightening, while others are downright distressing. However, scientists have uncovered several long-term health benefits of taking Ayahuasca.
This article reviews Ayahuasca, including its negative and positive effects on health.
Magic Mushrooms:
Magic mushrooms are wild or cultivated mushrooms that contain psilocybin, a naturally-occurring psychoactive and hallucinogenic====== compound. Psilocybin is considered one of the most well-known psychedelics, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administrations
Ketamine:
Ketamine (brand name Ketalar) is a dissociative anesthetic (blocks sensory perception) that has been available by prescription in the U.S. since the 1970s for human and veterinary uses. Dissociative drugs can lead to distortion of sights, colors, sounds, self, and one’s environment. It is available in a clear liquid or off-white powder form for intravenous injection.
Effects Of Psychedelic Drugs
In addition to causing hallucinations, hallucinogens cause diverse psychoactive effects. They can make people feel relaxed, high or energetic.
LSD can cause increased body temperature, appetite loss, numbness, weakness and tremors.
Psilocybin, the drug in magic mushrooms, can cause nervousness, paranoia and panic attacks.
Peyote’s active ingredient mescaline can cause high body temperature, coordination loss and sweating.
DMT can cause agitation, dizziness and muscular incoordination.
